Our Midwives
Ali Spry
REGISTERED MIDWIFE, WILDROSE TEAM (she/her)
Ali is a Canadian-born, British-trained midwife. Born in Alberta, she grew up on beautiful Vancouver Island before leaving Canada to backpack in the ‘90s. She spent 7 years travelling before settling in the United Kingdom, where she discovered Midwifery through her own pregnancy. She graduated in 2008 from Bournemouth University and practiced in the UK until returning home to Canada in 2018.
-
In 2020, Ali completed the Internationally Educated Midwifery Bridging Program at UBC and began practicing in Langley, BC. She then moved to Victoria and has been practicing there since 2022.
Ali believes wholeheartedly that birthing people have a fundamental right to unbiased information and the right to choose the care that is right for them and their families. She loves the model of care in British Columbia, as it fosters the ability for midwives to earn trust and build a relationship with their clientele.
Her background includes high-risk pregnancy care and midwifery-led care. Ali particularly loves a water birth and has a special interest in home birth.
She can be found gazing into tide pools whenever the opportunity arises, paddle boarding, walking her dogs, snowshoeing and—of course—spending time with her family.

I am Ali, and I am grateful to live and work in the beautiful territories of the Lekwungen-speaking Indigenous peoples. Midwifery was a mid-career change motivated by the wonderful care I received when birthing my son under the care of midwives. I was inspired by the opportunity to support families through life transitions, and to serve families in the sometimes vulnerable early weeks after birth. My favourite aspect of being a midwife is building relationships with clients, and I believe the most important skills I have as a midwife are listening and empathy.
-
After graduating from the UBC Midwifery Program, I worked in a full scope practice caring for pregnant, birthing and postpartum families. I recognized that I have a special love for helping postpartum folks as they blossom into new families or add a new sibling into the mix, and was grateful to join the Rosehips Postpartum Team. I am also honoured to work with a program in Victoria that supports families experiencing pregnancy loss.
My background is in anthropology, history, adult education, and restorative justice processes. I am a clinical instructor for the UBC Midwifery Program, and I really enjoy mentoring student midwives as they develop their skills.
When I am not with birthing folks, newborns and families, the things I love the most are spending time with my son and our friends in our beautiful city and around the Island, spending time in our garden, foraging edible plants, eating delicious food, and travelling.

I believe that pregnancy, birth, and family are foundational elements of our lives. I feel honoured to be a witness to the experience of birth so often, and to support and empower families.
I have a supportive partner and I am the mother of three mostly grown children and one furry dog. I am passionate about reproductive health, holistic medicine, music and building strong communities. I am happy in my kitchen and I love to feed my friends and family.

I previously worked as a social worker, supporting people with intellectual and mental health disabilities – who taught me a lot about truly hearing people and facilitating informed choice. After attending the births of my youngest two brothers, and birthing my daughter, I became a doula. As I attended more births, I became increasingly aware of the power of birth, the strength of humans, and the impact a care provider can have on the birth experience. My path drew me to the Bachelor of Midwifery program in Calgary, Alberta.
I was born and raised in Treaty 7 Territory, home of the Blackfoot Confederacy, as well as the Stoney Nakoda and Tsuut’ina peoples. I am looking forward to getting to know the Lekwungen-speaking people and their culture as my family makes our home in their traditional territory.
I support, in whole, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as well as the sovereignty of First Nations and mechanisms of redress for the disposition of lands and resources.
I am thrilled to join the lovely and supportive Rosehips Midwifery practice! I look forward to meeting you and supporting you and your family as you grow and birth your baby.
